A subwoofer is a purpose-built loudspeaker solely responsible for playing low frequencies (bass). SVS sealed subwoofers deliver audiophile quality bass at massive output levels so you can hear and feel every heart-pounding or subtle detail with its full impact and clarity.
Sealed cabinet subwoofers are favorites of music lovers and home theater fans who crave punchy and pinpoint accurate bass that starts and stops on a dime. Sealed subwoofers are very effective at rendering musical instruments like bass guitars and kick drums in a convincing and natural way. These characteristics make the sealed subwoofer a natural choice for audiophiles and critical music applications.
Nearly all SVS sealed subwoofers play below 20Hz, the threshold of human hearing. Below this frequency, sound is only felt, and playback adds a deeply immersive, palpable effect that draws you further into movies, music and other audio experiences.
With a sealed subwoofer, the room itself also has the potential to boost bass below a certain frequency. You get more output than your subwoofer can produce by itself—for free. The effect is called “room gain” and the effect and how to optimize for is explained here, What is Room Gain?
Compared to ported cabinet subwoofers with similar sized drivers and amplifier power, sealed subwoofers are more compact and excel with punchiness, accuracy, and transient response. Ported subwoofers in comparison produce greater dynamic output and can generally play lower, but the cabinets are significantly larger.
